Tea Type: Loose leaf

Served: Nothing added

Okay, I’ll admit it – I was completely surprised by this tea. I have tried other Lapsang Souchon teas in the past and was always disappointed by them. Therefore, I was not very excited to try this tea. However, after trying some other Joseph Wesley teas and enjoying them a lot, I was willing to give this one a go. I’m so happy that I did, because I love this tea! It has a rich malty flavor that gives me hints of coffee and dark chocolate, with just a bit of smoke. I notice the smokiness more in the aroma of the tea than the actual taste, adding another layer and making it even more interesting.

After drinking this tea, I now understand the appeal of Lapsang Souchon that was lost on my before. Go ahead, give it a try. It really is that good.

Abby & I have tried lapsang teas in the past and found neither of us really liked the smoky taste. My husband loves smoky scotch. It’s not my thing at all! If I’m going to drink a whisky I like sweeter bourbon the best, then irish, and last of all scotch because of the smoke! So when Abby & I saw that a lapsang tea was in the mix of samples from Joseph Wesley initially we weren’t initially that excited about it.

However, after our tea party tasting some of his other teas we were much more interested! Joseph Wesley tea is delicious! You can just call Joe our new tea BFF. I really loved this tea but didn’t expect I would. The smoke flavor is very subtle. I wouldn’t even characterize it as smoke. To me I’m getting more of a richness like in coffee or dark chocolate. The tea has almost a heavier body feel than other teas. Rich, indulgent, smooth, yum. Delicious with a touch of sweetness form the honey. Some samples stick around in my tea cabinet. This is GONE! 🙂

*Please note that we are just as critical of free teas a we are of ones we purchase. If we receive a tea we can not rate at least 3 or better we sill simply not review it!
