Typically you will find me drinking tea (obviously), but every so often I do mix it up. My family has a tradition of making fresh apple cider each fall. We use several varieties of apples each year to create a delicious blend…well, except this year that is. The apple crop didn’t materialize and with no apples you have no cider!

In search of a replacement, we ended up trying Green Mountain Hot Apple Cider made for Keurig. Honstely, I didn’t have high hopes. How could a K-cup compare to the fmaily’s fresh concoction? And really it doesn’t. This cider tastes good and smells great, but to me it doesn’t taste like cider. Maybe it’s because I am used to a tart, instead of sweet, cider. If you are looking for a tart, this isn’t it. This stuff is sweet, very sweet. All of that said, I still like it and I think it makes for a pleasing after dinner cuppa! Because of the cozy and comforting aroma and the sweet taste it can easily make for a quick dessert. Isn’t that the beauty of Keurig – quick and easy?

When the Keurig is brewing cider an image like the one above floats into my head. The apple-goodness-smell makes me think of all things fall. To me this Cider is a novelty dessert more than traditional cider. It’s comparable to how I feel about chai. Chai in powder or syrup form isn’t what I’d consider to be “tea” but it is still quite tasty. This version of cider is lighter in color than fresh apple cider and is more sugary in taste. The look & taste made me curious to see what was inside the K-cup.

So, I cut them open before & after brewing. Before brewing it reminded me of powdered chai. After brewing it looked like a mix of apple pie filling & apple butter. I could actually see little bits of apple in there and was pleasantly surprised. Again, while sweeter than traditional cider, it makes a great dessert or is a nice way to warm up after being outside raking leaves.

Taste: 4 of 5 apples – quite a good cuppa!
Steepability: 5 of 5 – this is easy to make!
