We have already posted about Katie’s sampling tea from our trip to Harney & Sons in Manhattan this past spring and now we are going to talk about mine! When I saw that they had created a special blend to celebrate the opening of the store we were standing it at the time, how could I have chosen anything else? The wonderful aroma of black tea, chocolate, vanilla, coconut and amaranth flower petals didn’t hurt either. The bright pink petals give striking contrast to the rich black tea. The blend creates an interesting and complex scent and as the tea steeps it changes slightly so that the different elements shine.

The flavor is nice too. It isn’t too sweet, which is my favorite part. Sometimes with blends like this the sweetness can overwhelm the tea. Not so, for this tea. There is a hint of sweetness but you are still clearly drinking tea! Instead of the tea flavor getting lost, it adds balance to the other sweet ingredients. Tea with hints of chocolate, coconut and vanilla from one of our favorite tea makers? Delicious! This very tasty tea is certainly worth a try if you are looking for something a little different.

Sometimes I buy things because they are pretty. I can admit that! As a commercial photographer, I’ve decided that gives me a free pass to be influenced by beautiful products, photos & packaging. Abby and I sampled this tea, along with many others, at Harney & Sons in SOHO so I knew it was beautiful inside that gorgeous tin. With flower petals mixed in this is one of the prettiest teas that I’ve ever seen! How could you not love the little pink petals inside? Seriously. LOVE!

Oh, by the way, it tastes great too. This a black tea with hints of chocolate & coconut. I like that it is still a black tea and gives you a caffeine boost. The chocolate and coconut flavors are present but not overpowering. I like tea that tastes like traditional black tea. This doesn’t taste like an herbal tea; you get the richness of black tea accented with some wonderful flavors. And it’s pretty & pink. Bonus!

Since this is Harney & Son’s SOHO store namesake tea, we’re thinking about our friends in NYC today. We hope that you are all safe & sound and weathering the storm. From the photos that we’re seeing up here in ME & MA it must be a crazy few days in New York City! We’re hoping for the best and that life in the city will return to normal sooner rather than later. Be safe everyone!

Review: Keurig Hot Apple Cider from Green Mountain Naturals

Typically you will find me drinking tea (obviously), but every so often I do mix it up. My family has a tradition of making fresh apple cider each fall. We use several varieties of apples each year to create a delicious blend…well, except this year that is. The apple crop didn’t materialize and with no apples you have no cider!

In search of a replacement, we ended up trying Green Mountain Hot Apple Cider made for Keurig. Honstely, I didn’t have high hopes. How could a K-cup compare to the fmaily’s fresh concoction? And really it doesn’t. This cider tastes good and smells great, but to me it doesn’t taste like cider. Maybe it’s because I am used to a tart, instead of sweet, cider. If you are looking for a tart, this isn’t it. This stuff is sweet, very sweet. All of that said, I still like it and I think it makes for a pleasing after dinner cuppa! Because of the cozy and comforting aroma and the sweet taste it can easily make for a quick dessert. Isn’t that the beauty of Keurig – quick and easy?

When the Keurig is brewing cider an image like the one above floats into my head. The apple-goodness-smell makes me think of all things fall. To me this Cider is a novelty dessert more than traditional cider. It’s comparable to how I feel about chai. Chai in powder or syrup form isn’t what I’d consider to be “tea” but it is still quite tasty. This version of cider is lighter in color than fresh apple cider and is more sugary in taste. The look & taste made me curious to see what was inside the K-cup.

(K-cup contents shown after brewing, left, and before brewing, right)

So, I cut them open before & after brewing. Before brewing it reminded me of powdered chai. After brewing it looked like a mix of apple pie filling & apple butter. I could actually see little bits of apple in there and was pleasantly surprised. Again, while sweeter than traditional cider, it makes a great dessert or is a nice way to warm up after being outside raking leaves.

Before trying this for the first time, I had absolutely no expectations about it, which is rare. Usually the name alone will give you an idea of what to expect on your first sip. Or, the images and description on the packaging or even previously developed opinions about the tea maker will put thoughts in your mind, whether or not you think so. In this case however, I only had a few tea bags in a Ziploc to go on. I didn’t know what type of tea this was. I had no idea who made it and I certainly didn’t know how it should best be prepared. And that was fun! My first clue was how the tea smelled …from inside the Ziploc. It was sitting on my desk as I was getting the last of some paperwork done before heading off to boil water. I noticed after a few minutes of type, type, typing a lovely scent in the air. Light, but there. It smelled a bit nutty with a little sweetness … like black tea! (Maybe?) Then when I dropped the tea bag into the water I immediately saw the tea turn reddish brown (black tea!) The aroma was much stronger now and very nice, just like black tea. Question one was solved. I was trying some great smelling black tea. It didn’t smell overly strong right off so I just left the tea bag in my mug while I drank it. (This is what I would recommend, by the way.) The other details would come later; it was time to just enjoy the tea.

As a blog team Katie and I are always swapping tea to try for review. This was one she happened to have on hand at one of our last get-togethers so she bagged it up and handed it over. Though there wasn’t time to write down what it was and who made it. We would get into all that later.

I actually really enjoyed this tea. I’m not sure how much of the detective work that I put in played into my fun with it, but I liked drinking it. It was a nutty, malty, easy to drink tea with a slight sweetness. Even with leaving the tea bag in the cup there was no bitterness which is great for those days when you have no time to worry about tea, you just need to drink it!

Oh, the Brits really do know how to make tea. For those of you who might not know, Marks & Spencer is a British department store. While this tea was a mystery to Abby, I purchased it at the British import store in Freeport, ME. This is the “Everyday” Tea. Click the link, luckily you CAN order it in the US. It is a medium strength tea. I have to say I just loved reading Abby’s review of this one. How fun to make her guess! I just might have to give her mystery tea more often.

I think this tea lives up to its name and is in fact perfect for everyday use. This is the quintessential black tea. Often I find black tea in bag form to be a bit week. This tea, however, lives up to my expectations. It is nice, rich, & flavorful without being too strong. I’m going to cross my fingers that my favorite British import store up in Maine continues to carry it! Or, I do have a friend who has been traveling to London on business…I might have to beg that he get me some more! ;) This tea is certainly worth the trouble of bribing a friend to bring back or paying the extra shipping. It is also quite nice as a iced tea. Try our refrigerator tea idea! Also, one if the nice things about this tea is its beautiful rich color. Look what a lovely color it remains even with milk. (Don’t mind the desk clutter in the background)

Harney & Sons Paris is everything you could want in a tea. Fragrant, robust and great tasting… it has it all! Katie picked up this little gem on our trip to Harney & Sons in NYC. We sampled it while there and decided we couldn’t possibly live without it. I love that this tea has both fruity/flowery side and a more pungent side thanks to a little bergamot. These two components come together prefectly to create a blance and clean taste. Though this tea has some sweetness, there isn’t one stand out flavor here – they are all blended nicely which makes it easy to pair this tea with both sweet and savory foods. I could go on and on forever about how much I like this tea, but would still probably not be able about describe it well enough.

If you are at all interested in trying interesting black tea blends, give this one a try right away! It is a bit tricky to acquire here in Maine as we don’t have a Harney & Sons tea shop and there are only a few varieties available in other stores here. However, by clicking the link above it will take you right to the amazon store where you can purchase a tin(or two) for yourself.

This is an Earl Grey based tea with floral notes that is fantastic! Typically I like my earl grey with cream & sugar but this tea is so flavorful that it is simply wonderful with nothing added. Warning, do not over steep this tea! It is just perfect plain so don’t let it get bitter.

When Abby & I were at Harney in NYC I picked this out as my “tasting” tea. What a good choice! Anthony & I had already has several cups of tea so I was over-caffeinated but still had to finish the cup because it was so tasty! Now I’ve been on vacation and lost my voice and I swear a cup of this tea helped bring it back. Enjoy this tea year round…it is also nice iced! Also, make sure to take a look at the pretty tea sachets, the packaging on this tea is excellent too!

Here we have Earl Grey taken to the next level with Stash Double Bergamot Earl Grey Black Tea. The name alone had me really excited to try this one. I love early grey and thought, what could be better than more earl grey in one cup?! There are just some days where you could really use an extra boost. This tea is one place to get it. The double bergamot is pungent and strong, but in a good way, if you like bergamot of course. Though very strong, the oil doesn’t take over. The black tea is there and isn’t masked by the bergamot. For those of you saying “bergamot, what the heck IS bergamot”, let me just tell you about this wonderful little addition to black tea that creates earl grey. It’s actually the oil from the bergamot orange thats added, lending a zesty citrus flavor. And in the case of this tea, a little extra is added! Exciting, right? I know.

Stay away from this tea if you are not a bergamot fan. You will not like it. But for the rest of us, those with memberships to the bergamot fan club, this double is so tasty! While drinking this tea, I found it to be comforting in that the robustness of flavor was well matched to the strong caffeine that it provided. Like you are getting a kick of energy and you know it by how it tastes.

Double Bergamot = double yum! I’ve been on a serious Earl Grey kick for a while. Perhaps since Abby & I visited the Harney & Son’s in SOHO. It must have been that Earl Grey Ice Cream! And, if you’re a fan of Bergamot then you’ll be a fan of this tea. The tea is nice and strong making for a  good morning cuppa. The bergamot certainly isn’t overpowering, but it is stronger than regular Earl Grey. Like I said before, double yum! While this is too strong to be an evening tea it’s makes a great wake-up cup or an afternoon pick-me-up. The citrus notes in Earl Grey make it pair well with other fruit flavors. Like jam. Like jam on scones. Mmmmm…better go make another batch of those scones! Like Abby said, if you’re an Earl Grey tea lover then you’ll certainly think this is fabulous. Enjoy!

Though still a strong black tea, Lady Grey is a slightly lighter, citrus blend compared to other black tea blends. The lemon and orange accents give this tea a bright and refreshing quality not often found in strong tea. This makes it especially easy to drink in the summer, though it certainly shouldn’t be held to the few short months of summertime. I find that Lady Grey pairs well with most foods and is tasty enough to stand alone as well. Perhaps Katie’s scones would make a lovely companion for this cuppa! Doesn’t that look good?!

Lady Grey is a smart addition to any tea cupboard, as this citrus blend appeals varying palates. If you have never tried it before and enjoy strong black teas, I would recommend giving it a try. I doubt you will be disappointed.

The story of Lady Grey Tea is an interesting one. While I do not support the idea that us ladies need a more delicate tea; lady grey is a more mild form or Earl Grey Tea. Let me remind you that ladies like strong tea too! My British-Canadian Gammie likes her tea, and I quote, “strong enough to float a horseshoe.” That being said, Lady Grey is a nice afternoon tea. I love that it is different from black tea yet still not too heavy for the afternoon. The bergamot flavor in this tea is quite mild yet still present differentiating it from other black tea. I enjoy this or a green tea when I feel that afternoon 2-3pm crash.

First of all, happy 8/20! Last August we were just starting the blog and now we’ve been posting for a full year! You may find it odd that we wish you a happy 8/20. Well, in one of our first posts we talked about how in college all of the roommates bought a big basket of tea as our holiday gift to each other. That house was #820 on the street. Our friends at Syracuse would refer to houses by the # instead of saying ‘so and so’s place.’ As college students always looking for a reason to party we’d often celebrate the house’s day. An odd little story, but that’s the truth and why I’ll always have a big smile on August 20th. (And to your guy friends who lived around the corner…happy almost 8/29!)

So, on to the part you’ve been waiting for, right? The giveaway! What can you win? The prize , shown below, is Stash’s 13 iced tea sampler.*

Review: Stash Lime Green Iced Tea

Katie says:

When I was steeping this tea I immediately noticed a strong lime scent. At first I was afraid that it would overpower the green tea. However, once I tasted the tea over ice I found the lime and green flavors to be a nice balance. I didn’t even add any sugar! This iced tea is a great alternative to pre-mixed iced teas because it packs in a lot of flavor without the need for the added calories of sweetener.

Taste: 4 of 5 leaves: Quite a good cuppa!
Steepability: 4 of 5 — this tea requires very little effort.

Abby says:

The Stash Lime Green Iced Tea is an interesting twist on the typical green iced tea. Instead of the traditional lemon that is often added to iced tea, this one has lime flavor added for you. It is always fun to try something a little different and with the ease of making this iced tea, why not!

Taste: 3.5 of 5 leaves: A decent tasty tea.

Steepability: 5 of 5 leaves: This tea is easy to make!

A good strong tea can really hit the spot on dark and gloomy mornings such as this one.  Everything is damp, the rain is coming down and all I want is a hot cuppa. On mornings like this I always find myself reaching for teas like Twinings Irish Breakfast.  This is a strong, robust tea with a good kick of caffeine.  It is most often prepared with a spot of milk and maybe something sweet.  That isn’t really my style however, so I don’t add anything to mine and for me, that is just right.  As I have said before everyone’s taste for tea is different and you should play around with different additions (or not) to find what you like best.  And, of course, we would love to hear about it!

Some of you may remember my Happy St. Patrick’s Day post from back in March of this year.  There I quickly reviewed this tea as well as a couple of other Irish Breakfast teas.  If you haven’t been able to tell, I really like this tea blend.  Katie and I both enjoy strong tea and the more we get to write about it the better!

I second Abby’s opinion, this is a very tasty tea! Although I find Irish breakfast to be a tad milder and sweeter than English breakfast, this tea still gives you a good boost of caffeine. I LOVE my black tea with cream & sugar and this one is perfectly suited to be prepared in this way. Also, I love that it doesn’t get too biter. This tea is perfect for your travel mug, or to take out on porch without worrying about it turning bitter and needed to find a place to toss the bag. Just leave it in the cup, I promise, it will still be tasty!

Once again Abby & I agree! This is a decent tasty tea that is very nice iced in the summer. I was glad that it was tasty iced because I actually bought this in the spring when I had a terrible sinus infection. I thought orange…vitamin c maybe? And when my nose is stuffed I like to constantly drink tea because the heat seems to be the only thing that keeps me able to breathe through my nose! Anyway, back to summer.  Since that IS the season. Brew this tea in a large batch and keep it in the freezer with a few slices of lemon or orange. It is tasty & won’t keep you up at night! And…if you buy a box to make iced tea now we’ll be sure to use it up (if there is any left) during cold season!

I’m happy to be reviewing this one in the summer because it makes decent iced tea. When the weather is hot I am always looking for tea that I normally drink hot that translates well into iced versions. Most of these have caffeine, so I for one, need to be careful of how much I drink and at what time of day. This tea is decent as both a hot and cold beverage and it is caffeine free! This isn’t my favorite tea for either category, but it isn’t unpleasant either. It has a nice a-little-bit sweet and a-little-bit spicy flavor, which I like, but for me is a little too weak.

Mild tea drinkers, this might be just what you need, for hot or cold weather, any time of the day.

I like the complexity in this green tea. It is not simply green with mint but you can also taste the notes of lemon from the lemon myrtle. What is lemon myrtle? I’ve more commonly heard it referred to as lemon scented verbena, which is described as having calming and uplifting qualities. Smith Teamaker says of this tea: “Fez artfully evokes old Morocco, and tastes best when shared with friends while lounging on pillows.” Sipping tea while lounging on pillows with friends? I’m in!

This tea is plenty strong enough to make 2 large cups and looks beautiful in it’s translucent tea sachet. As you know if you’ve read our other posts…big beautiful pieces of tea leaves earn bonus point in my book because they usually result in better & stronger flavors. Once again my theory that “big leaves = big taste” holds true.

The combination of blended Chinese green teas and a touch of spearmint give this tea a wonderful complexity and charming earthy flavor. What’s so great about this blend is that you are able to really taste the green tea and the spearmint separately if you try, but together they make a great blend. Another thing that I really like about this tea is that the flavors aren’t too strong like many teas with spearmint. This is a drink it all day kind of tea!

Green tea drinkers and spearmint fanatics alike with appreciate this tea. As neither piece is overly strong this tea will work for a variety of palates. As always, with green teas, remember to watch your steep time!
